Lights of Courage

Tonight we went downtown to hang our lanterns for the lights of courage campaign, to celebrate the courage of people who are fighting, have beaten, or have succumbed to cancer.

It was really quite beautiful to see the hundreds of colourful Chinese paper lanterns illuminated in rows, and the hand written messages expressing hope, humour, love, grief and inspiration.

Each lantern comes with a paper tag, on which people can write a message as a tribute to anyone they know who has been diagnosed with cancer. I thought that this would be a great thing for us to do as a family so we could all think about the many ways that cancer has affected our lives. It was especially special to me because my dad has been diagnosed with cancer and will be starting his chemo treatments on Monday.

Asher wrote his Lantern for his Grumpy M, Great Grandpa Ross, Great Grandpa Irwin and Great Grandpa Percival. We know Grumpy will beat this thing so he can see his grandson grow big and strong!!!
